How to Prepare baby for Session

Newborn photos are a great way to capture the memories of your baby’s first days. Before you book your newborn session, there are a few things you should know. Today, I'm going to give you a few tips that I list in my prep guide if you book your session with me.

Schedule Your Session Ahead of Time

Newborn sessions are usually done when a baby is between 5 to 14 days old, so you will need to plan ahead if you are wanting newborn photos done. By booking your newborn session in advance, this will help your photographer and you get prepared for your session. By booking early you won't have to worry about your photographer having availability and it will be one less thing to worry about once the baby arrives!

Keep Your Baby Awake Before Session

As a newborn, your baby is going to sleep a lot. While it may seem like they sleep all day, usually when you want them to be asleep, they will be awake. Most parents want cute sleeping newborn photos, so it is key to keep your baby awake before the session so that they will sleep through the session, making for a better photo shoot. (While it's not always a guarantee your baby will sleep this will help).

Feed Your Baby About 20-30 Minutes Before Your Session

It’s no secret that babies like to eat often, and if they don’t get what they want, it can get a little stressful. Nothing crashes a newborn session like a hungry baby, so ensure that you feed your baby about 20-30 minutes before your session. Not only will this keep them full throughout the session, but it can also help them sleep better throughout the shoot. Some babies will require a feeding during their session this will depend on how full the baby got, if baby is cluster feeding, and if the baby is formula or breast fed.

Put Loose Diaper and Loose Clothing on Baby

In order to keep your baby comfortable and avoid diaper impressions, change your baby into a loose diaper before you leave for you session. Also put baby in something loose and easy to change out of. This will help your photographer have an easier transition tin getting started with the session.
